Hello! My name is Kristie Francisco and I am serving in the capacity of Miss Uintah County this year. I have lived in Uintah County for the large majority of my life and am proud of it! I know that without the community and its members, I would not be able to accomplish what I have and be the person I am today.
I am currently attending Brigham Young University and studying Nutritional Science, but will not stop there! Beyond my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend medical school and become a general surgeon. I enjoy working and serving in the health care field because I see the changes that can be made in peoples’ lives every day. This love for the health care field and serving others has guided me to choose a platform that I am passionate about and makes a monumental difference in our community!
My platform is the Radiation Vacation Van. The van assists with transportation for members in our community fighting cancer or other serious medical conditions. Running every day of the week, the Radiation Vacation Van makes it possible for local area residents to make it to treatments needed on the Wasatch Front. So far, the community has been absolutely fantastic in supporting this cause! From the first day of my reign and the beginning of a campaign called, “Help fill the tank!” the community has come together to raise over $10,000!! What an amazing accomplishment! I plan to hold an event per month in support of this great cause and to recognize community members and their generosity. Thank you for all of the support you have given so far to a great cause.
Miss Outstanding Teen Uintah County Madeleine Duffin. Age 17, junior at Uintah High School. Daughter of Mark and Kelli Duffin. My Little Miss is Kaija Harris. Daughter of Chris and Wendy Harris. Mine and Kaija's talent is dancing. We live for it. I made it into the top 10 at Miss Utah's Outstanding Teen. It was an amazing experience, that I am truly grateful to have had! I met so many inspiring and beautiful ladies there. They taught me so many things in such a short amount of time. I would love to have every teenage girl get the experience I did, it was life changing.
My platform is "Supporting Military Families". Since September 11, 2001 our nation has seen an increase in military deployments. This has affected my family as my dad is a member of the Utah National Guard. The first time my dad was deployed, he left within a month of getting his orders. Time was short in making preparations for our home not to mention spending time together. We did not have much support from other military families and we could not give support to others because we did not know who they were. Having experienced several long term activations, it is my desire to assist activated families, especially children, with coping skills acquired through personal relationships that are developed through association and service.
My dad's current deployment has been much different than the previous two. The military has established a Yellow Ribbon Program. This program helps prepare families for deployments, redeployments and personal adjustment to civilian life. The program supports all ages including the spouse, children, and parents in dealing with what is going on, but also connects them with other military families going through the same thing. In the past I didn't like to talk about my feelings while my dad was gone. I just didn't see the need to share how I was feeling, but when I reluctantly attended our Yellow Ribbon meeting, and saw the other youth, I didn't have to say anything, there was a mutual understanding among us. Knowing we were all in the same boat helped me feel connected to them. These experiences have taught me how extremely important it is to feel connected to other military families.
Realizing how deeply the need is for military families to feel connected, I joined with the Family Readiness Director in the Uintah Basin to coordinate activities for the youth of the guard members in my own community. It is important to begin building relations among the children so they may know that there are others who understand their situation. It is also vital to let kids know that is okay to still have fun. On my dad's previous deployments I felt guilty about going out and having fun because he was in a dangerous situation. My goal is to have quarterly activities with these children so that they can start to associate with each other, build relationships and have fun. I also have started a food pantry for the military families that are in hardships while their spouse is deployed.
Since the Miss America's organization is "Children's Miracle Network". I decided with help of my mom and aunts to make tutu's, wands, and capes for the children at Primary Children's Hospital that are going through chemotherapy. In doing this I hope to give them hope and strength during this very difficult time of there lives.
I am very grateful to be this year's Miss Outstanding Teen for Uintah County. I have experienced so many incredible things this year and am looking forward to more service I get to do. Thank you for giving me this experience.
My name is Lexi Blackham and I am Miss Ashley Valley. My little miss this year is Savannah Keiver, daughter of Micky and Suzy Kiever. My platform issue is children's literacy. I chose this platform issue because I knew I wanted to focus on the children in our community. My platform is not about teaching children to read. It’s about giving them the tools to learn to love reading. It’s also about teaching kids studying habits that they can carry with them as they grow up. This platform is important because research shows that 35% of children enter kindergarten without the necessary skills to be successful students. If our children don’t learn to love books now it becomes a problem later in their educational lives. There is a 90% probability that a child who is a poor reader in the first grade will be a poor reader in the fourth grade. This year I hope to encourage kids to read by showing them that reading can be fun and informative. I also hope to hold a successful book drive in order to ensure that every child has the opportunity to get lost in a good book.
